Marseille is the second-largest city in France, the administrative capital of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and also home to France’s largest commercial port. Marseille can also be called a cultural “melting pot”, as it serves as an entrance to France for many immigrants in the country. It is also the oldest town in France.
It is a regional cultural and entertainment center with an opera house, museums, art galleries, cinemas, and plenty of dining and dancing. Today, Marseille is truly a French City, with unrivalled music and fashion industries that add a dynamic flavour to the multi-ethnic mix.
(June to September), the city comes to life with all manner of events from dance and music to theatre and gay pride.
The Musée de la Mode will appeal to the fashion enthusiast.
The 4th Century Cathedral of Sainte-Marie-Majeure, and the 12th century parish church of Saint-Laurent are also well worth a visit.
