Popularly known as the Island of the Gods, Jeju Island is the largest island off the coast of the Korean Peninsula, and the main island of Jeju Province of South Korea. It is primarily known for its dormant volcanoes, hearty seaside fare and an array of hiking trails.
Jeju Island—as Korea's largest island—has 9 sub islands that are uninhabited.

Many nationalities enjoy visa-free entry to Jeju Island, if not entering via South Korea mainland. (suspended currently as a precaution from Covid-19)

The island's vibrant combination of volcanic rock, frequent rains, and temperate climate, make it very equivalent to the Hawaiian Islands in the U.S.

There's an array of things tourists can choose to do here:

hiking on Halla-san (South Korea's highest peak),
viewing sunrises and sunsets over the ocean,
watching majestic waterfalls,
horse-riding,
or simply lying around on the sandy beaches.

Transportation

Jeju International Airport

Located in Jeju City, Jeju International Airport is a geopolitically important spot, as it is at the center of northeast Asia, connecting China, Japan, Hong Kong, and Mainland Korea

Jeju International Airport is the largest and busiest gateway to both domestic and overseas travelers to the island. The airport also runs domestic flights to Gimpo Airport in Seoul.

Transportation

Since there are no trains or subway in Jeju Island, buses and taxis are the two main public transportation modes on the island.

There are inner (intra-city) and outer (intercity) city buses and Airport Limousine Bus available and these buses cover almost all of Jeju Island. The bus system in Jeju is a bit complex and if you don't hold an international driver's license, opting for the taxi can be a great option too!

Rental Car – AJ Rent-A-Car - Car rental companies will ask for your passport and international driver’s license (most country’s licenses alone won’t suffice, so you’ll need to take care of getting an international license while still in your own country).

Accommodations

There are a number of luxury hotels, beach resorts, and for the budget traveler, hostels.

Staying near Jeju City (north of the island) is recommended if it’s your first time to Jeju. It’s better to be close to the airport but you still have access to the rest of the island. There are more food and bar options to walk to or accessible a short cab ride away.

Airbnb’s also are easy on the wallet as you can go as economical or luxurious as your heart desires! If you rented a car, ensure there is a parking spot available or street parking.

Food

The coastal city of Jeju has a thriving culinary culture that possesses world-class gastronomy as well as local delicious food.

Jeju Island is the home to many deep-diving women or Haenyeos who put on their wetsuits to dive into the sea for the freshest octopus, clams, squid, seaweed and other kinds of seafood.

Black Pork, Jeju Island's most famous dish is something you can't afford to miss here. Nothing beats a refreshing bowl of cold buckwheat noodles that provide the best respite from the sweltering heat.

Dive into an impressive range of exotic seafood from spicy Hairtail Stew to Abalones and Seafood Ramen. Do make it a point to pay a visit to the O'Sulloc Tea Museum and sip some special Jeju Tangerine Tea!

Shopping

Jeju Island is covered with stores featuring unique local products.
Make sure you shop for Jeju Island’s local products as well as cheaper than normal items at the duty-free shop, friendly street markets, and local small stores, and take part in the festive atmosphere of Jeju Island.

Fresh tangerines and other Jeju specialties are readily available for purchase in - tourist shops and traditional markets such as the Five Day Market (Seogwipo Hyngto, Goseong and more).

Popular souvenirs include Crafts, specially-dyed clothing and cosmetic items using natural ingredients - that embody the unique cultural flavor of Jeju.

Most tourist attractions on the island are coupled with their own souvenir stands, featuring products specific to each site in addition to Jeju favorites.

Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak (UNESCO World Natural Heritage)

Climb a volcano by following the path to the peak of Seongsan Ilchul-bong - a dormant volcano on the east coast of Jeju.

Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, which is 180m above sea level, erupted underwater in the ocean about 5,000 years ago, which makes it a very rare case among the many craters in Jejudo Island.

Though people used to farm in the area, it is now a natural habitat for 200 types of vegetation such as silvergrass, vine, Pseudosasa japonica, and giant angelica as well as a natural habitat for a variety of wild animals.

It was designated a Natural Monument on July 19, 2000.
It was recognized for its outstanding landscape and geological value by UNESCO on July 2, 2007, when it was added to the World Heritage List.
In October 2010, it was named a Global Geopark site.

Most popular among them, are the Olle Trails. There are almost 27 of them. Walk any of the Olle trails to explore the rural face of Jeju.

Hallasan Mountain

As one of Korea’s 3 spirit mountains, Hallasan Mountain is located on the southernmost part of the Korean Peninsula and lays claim to the title of South Korea’s tallest mountain with a height of 1,950m above sea level.

Home to all sorts of vegetation, the mountain possesses immense scientific value and is a veritable treasure trove of animals and plants, leading to the designation of Hallasan Mountain Natural Reserve as Natural Monument 182 on October 12, 1966.

In fall, when everything is blanketed by a colorful display of flowers, the mountain covered with the red color of the fall foliage is truly a sight to behold, while the snow-covered mountain in the winter stands out as the view to surpass all views. This celebrated mountain possesses a view of nature that is constantly changing forms and colors according to the season.

A young volcanic mountain from the Quarternary Period of the Cenozoic Era, Hallasan Mountain was believed to have erupted 25,000 years ago, and the 360 or so volcanic cones surrounding the mountain present a unique view.

The mountain was designated as a National Park on March 24, 1970 and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in December 2002.

Furthermore, the beautiful land of Jeju and Hallasan Mountain, which preserved the mystery of ancient times and connected Jeju to Jungmun with its western core, were acknowledged as god-given gifts and an unparalleled treasure that must be maintained by the people of the world.
This lead to the designation of the Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes as Korea’s first UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site on June 27, 2007 as well as being recognized as Global Geopark on October 4, 2010.

Manjanggul Lava Tube (UNESCO World Natural Heritage)

Do visit Manjanggul Cave, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is one of the finest lava tunnels in the world. It was formed thousands of years ago, and it is very well preserved.

The total length of Manjanggul Lava Tube is about 7.4km. It is a lava tube that is partially multilayered. It is one of the largest lava tubes in the world.

Due to the sinking of the ceiling, there are 3 entrances. The one that tourists can use is the second entrance and they are only allowed to go as far as 1km into it.

There are various cave formations in Lava Tunnel in Manjanggul Lava Tube, such as stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones, lava tubes, lava shelves, and lava rafts. In particular, the lava column that is located at the end of the tourist area is about 7.6m high and is known as the highest lava column in the world.

Teddy Bear Safari (Teseum) is a doll museum composed of the world’s cutest and loveliest teddy bears, which are known to be effective at helping people find emotional stability and psychotherapy. It was established to provide happiness, joy, and new strength to modern people who are thrust into emotionally draining environments through the unique fluffiness of teddy bears.

It is the first museum in the world to feature the works of over 100 artists from approximately 10 countries, including Korea, Germany, France, and the US, as well as artistic teddy bear products, safari animal dolls, and doll depictions of underwater stories.

Not only has this allowed the museum to become one of Jeju’s most beloved tourist attractions, but it has also become one of the most internationally famous museums in Jeju.

Itinerary

Jeju isn’t a large island, but you’ll still want to plan ahead so you can take into account opening and closing times of activities.

Jeju also is not a party island, so things do close around 9 PM.
