Meaning of Riyadh
the city name is derived from the plural of the Arabic word ‘Rawdah’ meaning gardens or meadows, so named for natural fertility provided by its location at the juncture of ‘Wadis Hanifah and Batha’.

Geographical Location
is located slightly east of the centre of Saudi Arabia in the heart of ‘Tuwaiq’ escarpment in the ‘an-Nafud’ desert and the area is known as the ‘Najd’ region. The city sits at an average of 600 metres above sea level.

Riyadh has a hot desert climate with long, hot summers and short, mild winters. May to September is hot while October to March is mild and sometimes rainy.

Riyadh besides being the capital is also the political and administrative centre of Saudi Arabia. The King, the Council of Ministers, The Consultative Assembly (Shura) and the Supreme Judicial Council of Saudi Arabia are all situated in the city.

Getting to Riyadh
Saudi E-visa – It is necessary for most foreign visitors to obtain a visa to enter Saudi Arabia. It is available to citizens of 49 eligible foreign countries. Applicants must have a passport from one of the eligible countries valid for at least 6 months from their date of entry into the country. They will also need a credit/debit card to pay the visa fee, as well as an up-to-date email address to receive the visa. Applicants need to make sure they complete every section of the e-visa application accurately. On approval for an e-visa the traveller only needs to print a copy of the electronic visa to present to the Saudi authorities along with the passport on arrival. Tourists from other countries should apply for a consulate visa through Saudi embassies and consulates.

Best Time to Visit Riyadh – Although business travel to Riyadh is round the year however visitors travelling for leisure, the best period is from November to March.

Arriving in and departing from Riyadh – King Khalid International Airport serves the city. It is located 35 kms. north of Riyadh and consists of five passenger terminals out of which three are in use. Terminal 1 is used for all international flights except Saudia and Middle East airlines, Terminal 2 is used by international airlines who are SkyTeam members and Terminal 5 opened in 2016 services Saudia and Flynas airlines domestic flights. There are eight air bridges per terminal to speed up handling and turnaround time of flights. For passenger ease and movement from one terminal to another there are moving walkways which also connect the international and domestic terminals. The passengers transferring from any of the terminals to terminal 5 can also avail free shuttle bus services. The complex also includes a modern VIPs terminal, restaurants, cafeterias and commercial shops. There is a special terminal for receiving visiting ‘Heads of States known as the ‘Royal Terminal’ and a ‘Royal Mosque’ in the centre of the passenger terminal which can accommodate 5000 worshippers.

Getting around Riyadh
Taxis are an efficient transport option to and from Riyadh airport, taxi services are available at the airport terminals. An official taxi has the marking of airport logo and generally has taximeter and if it is without then it is prudent to agree on a flat fare to your destination. Passengers also have the option of utilizing ‘Uber, Careem and Bolt’ by pre-booking it on their respective applications and visitors can also book airport transfers through companies having desks at airport or with the hotel they are booked to stay with at a cost. Self-Drive Car Rental – is a good option for male visitors having international driving permit which along with the passport to rent a car. At Riyadh airport ‘Avis, Hertz, Budget, Al Wefaq, Al Theeb’ have counters and also offices in the city. Riyadh Timeline

The capital of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh is an ancient city and before the advent of Islam, the settlement at the site of modern Riyadh was known as ‘Hajr’ and was founded by the tribe of ‘Banu Hanifa’. Noted Moroccan traveller ‘Ibn Batuta’ visited ‘Hajr’ in the 14th century and described this city in his travelogue while on way to perform ‘Hajj’ to Makkah. The earliest known reference to the area by the name ‘Riyadh’ comes from a 17th century chronicler reporting on an event from the year 1590.

1737
‘Dehlam ibn Dawwas’ took control of Riyadh and built a single wall around the oasis, making them effectively a single city. The name Riyadh meaning gardens refers to these earlier oasis towns.

1774
Following an alliance between ‘Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahab’ and ‘Muhammad ibn Saud’ and emerging victorious after years of warfare, Riyadh was captured and ‘First Saudi State’ declared with ‘Diriyah’ as its capital.

1818
‘Muhammad Ali’ then Viceroy of Egypt on behalf of Ottoman empire sent forces which defeated the first Saudi state.

1823
Riyadh became capital of ‘Najd’ under ‘Turki bin Abdullah’ and the first ‘Emir’ of the second Saudi state.

1865
‘Masmak’ fortress was built under the reign of ‘Mohammed al-Rasheed’ who had wrested the control of the city from the house of Saud.

1875
‘Ibn Saud’ the charismatic leader was born into the noble ‘Saud’ dynasty. He became the monarch and the founder of Saudi Arabia, the third Saudi state and ruled it from 1932-1953.

1902
In battle of Riyadh ‘Ibn Saud’ emerged victorious and captured ‘Masmak’ fortress. He retrieved his ancestral kingdom and expanded his kingdom which covered most of the Arabian Peninsula.

‘Ibn Saud’ unified competing tribes into a modern state by constituting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with Riyadh as its capital.

1938
Oil is discovered in Saudi Arabia.

1945
The historic ‘Murabba’ palace was completed to house the ‘Al Saud’ Royal family. 1953 The founder of modern Saudi Arabia ‘Ibn Saud’ passed away.

King Saud university opened.

Riyadh University for women founded, it is currently known as ‘Princess Nora bint Abdul Rahman University’. It is the largest women’s university in the world.

Saudi Culture
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia covers most of the Arabian Peninsula and majority of the population is ethnically Arab mostly descending from the nomadic tribes that have traditionally lived throughout the region. Saudi culture is defined by its Arab and Islamic heritage, its historical role as an ancient trade centre and its Bedouin traditions. The Saudi society in general is religious, traditional and family oriented. Saudi Arabia is the birthplace and cradle of Islam and home to two of the holiest cities Makkah and Madinah held in highest reverence by Muslims and main destinations of Hajj and Umrah for millions of pilgrims from all over the world. Majority of its population follows Islam and the Holy Quran is considered its constitution and ‘Sharia - the Islamic law’ as its main legal resource. Arabic one of the oldest languages in the world is the official language of Saudi Arabia and the major variants of Arabic spoken in the kingdom are ‘Najdi, Hejazi and Gulf Arabic’.

In the second half of the 20th century the Saudi nation underwent a transformation from a nomadic society to a rich commodity producer - oil as a result of which the Kingdom urbanized rapidly. Most of the country’s infrastructure has been built since the 1970s and today the Saudi population is highly cosmopolitan with majority of the Saudi population now live in urban metropolitan areas like Riyadh, Jeddah or Dammam.

Culture and Business Do’s and Don’ts
Below we share do’s and don’ts that a visitor should observe when meeting interacting with Saudis in the kingdom.

Do’s:

Visitors should learn Arabic phrases to get by and learning the language will greatly help when meeting Saudis and in work relationships.
Visitors should always show respect for Saudi flag and monarch.
Men and women should dress modestly and cover themselves appropriately.
When shaking hands or accepting refreshment, the right hand should always be used.
When entering a hotel, establishment greet the people with ‘Assalam alai-kum’ and if one is greeted this way then answer back with ‘waale kum salaam’.
If a visitor is invited for tea then the person is being honoured as a guest, the invitation should be accepted.
It is polite to have two cups of Arabic coffee in a Saudi home, no more, no less. When a person has had his fill, the person should hand over the cup and shake it from side to side while giving it back.
When entering a house, holy place it is customary to remove your shoes unless one is told not to do so.
In a banquet where food is served in one large dish, no cutlery is provided then only the right hand should be used to pick the food to eat.
Saudis like to do business with those they know and trust and hence dedicating time, effort and patience to building relationships is critical for success when doing business.
Business meetings should always be arranged in advance and always better if scheduled in the morning.
Saudis are skilled negotiators and requires several layers of approval and should not be rushed.

Don’ts:

Alcohol is banned and breaking alcohol laws are a punishable offence.
Male and female should refrain from holding ands and public displays of affection.
If visiting a friend’s house avoid visiting between 1400-1600 hours as it is siesta time.
Both host and visitor address each other using Mr. with family name and this is the most commonly used form of address.
A visitor should never call anyone with a ‘come here’ motion of finger as it is considered offensive.
In Ramadan visitors during fasting time should not smoke or have water or food in public.
One should never burp at meal tables.
Gambling is banned in Saudi Arabia.
Visitors should avoid discussing or sharing opinion on politics of the country.
Visitors should not criticize Islam or Saudi cultural practises.
Visitors should not discuss anything of a sexual nature, especially around the opposite gender.
Crossing the feet as then the soles of the shoe/feet is perceived as insulting to the host and highly offensive.
Do not attempt to enter a mosque if one is not a Muslim or unless one has permission.
Do not touch Holy Quran as even a Muslim is discouraged from touching the holy book without ablution.
Do not photograph any person without asking for his/her permission.
Possession of pornographic material is a punishable offence.
Visitors should not photograph military installations, ports and airport facilities without permission.
One should not stare at women.

Visitors should know
Saudi Arabia is a gender segregated country and in public areas such as shopping malls, restaurants and the workplace have entire areas which are female only. Even while visiting attractions it is always advisable to check with your sightseeing provider if male and female visit timings or days are different.

Islamic Rituals, Religious and other Festivals
Namaz – at call to prayers which is five times in a day, shops, businesses and facilities close at each prayer time and people go and pray in mosques.

Weekends - Friday is the holiest day for Muslims and the weekend days are Friday-Saturday in Saudi Arabia. Like in other Muslim countries, on Fridays, in the afternoon ‘Jummah’ prayers are held and accompanied with a sermon.

The Holy month of Ramadan – is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and Muslims fast from dawn to dusk and people work reduced hours and by sunset friends and families gather to enjoy breaking their fast together. By night after the ‘Isha’ prayers people stay in the mosque for ‘Taraweeh’. Each day during Ramadan people partake ‘Suhour’ before ‘Fajr’ dawn prayers before they start fasting.

Eid ul-Fitr – Muslims mark the final day of the fasting month of ‘Ramadan’ with a religious festival ‘Eid ul-Fitr’ which begins with prayers at dawn and continues with large feasts and lively celebrations among families and friends.

Eid al-Adha – in the Islamic lunar calendar, this festival falls on the 10th day of ‘Dhu al-Hijjah’. This festival commemorates the sacrifice made by Prophet Abraham. A ’Qurbani- sacrifice’ is carried out by Muslims of a goat, sheep, cow or camel and the meat is shared. People celebrate the festival with prayers, dressing up in fine clothing, meeting, greeting and partaking in feasts.

Milad al-Nabi – this festival commemorates the birth of Prophet Mohammed (P.B.U.H.). On this day Muslims remember, discuss and celebrate the Prophet’s life, hold night long prayers, elaborately decorate their homes and mosques, greet each other and partake in feasts.

Other Cultural Events
Maharajan al-Janadriyah – is a cultural and heritage festival held in ‘Jenadriyah near Riyadh’. It was first organized in 1985 under the patronage of King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz and with time it has grown to become the top Arab festival that showcases the local heritage of Arabian Peninsula region and Saudi Arabian heritage. This festival lasts two weeks and hosts varied events like ‘Al Janadriya operetta, Saudi Ardah, tourism oasis, heritage village activities, poetry evenings, dancing, folk costumes, display of traditional crafts such as pottery, weaving, woodwork, leatherwork and metalwork, camel and horse races. Every year Saudi Arabia invites a country as guest of honour to this festival.

Unification of the Kingdom Day – the history of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia began on September 23rd 1932 when by royal decree the dual kingdoms of the ‘Hejaz and Najd’ with its dependencies as two separate units, was unified under the name of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’ by ‘Ibn Saud’. This is the country’s public secular holiday.

Riyadh Spring Festival – this festival lasts 10 days takes place in March every year celebrates nature and the spring season. The outstanding attraction is the planting of 1.4 million flowers and ornamental plants that together form the massive landscape decorations.

King Abdulaziz Camel Festival – World’s Biggest Camel Fest:
Location: Southern Sayahdah, 120 kilometres from Riyadh

Is a month long grand annual winter event (dates of festival may vary yearly) in Saudi Arabia. The festival is named after King Abdulaziz founder of modern Saudi Arabia who formed the kingdom through military conquest, often on the back of camels. It aims to strengthen and consolidate camel heritage and highlight the importance of camel to the Saudi kingdom though a variety of festival sites like camel village – a giant festival site split into sections like desert park, commercial area, a village centre where activities, entertainment, cultural events, traditional foods and handicrafts are available, pavilions like ‘Desert Man Pavilion’ which documents life in Arabian Peninsula, ‘Khan el-Khalili Pavilion’ which presents popular Egyptian folklore, ‘Classic Cars Pavilion’ showcases vintage vehicles and ‘Al Ardah Academy Pavilion’ – demonstrates folkloric group dance of Arabia performed with two rows of men opposite one another wielding swords or canes accompanied by drums and spoken poetry. The ‘Camel Museum’ exhibits the history of the ship of the desert in Islamic and Arab countries, provides overview of camel breeds as well as paintings and drawings made of the animal’s hair and a host of events like camel obedience contests, camel caravans, storyteller’s tent, camel races, nomad games, camel auction and the star of the show is the ‘Camel beauty pageant’ where winners win millions of Riyals in prize money.

Has largely developed from the surrounding regions of the Arabian Peninsula and influenced by Turkish, Persian and African cuisines. Its cuisine varies from region to region however the most common food items in Saudi cuisine used are wheat, rice, goat, camel, sheep, chicken – slaughtered according to Islamic dietary laws, seafood, potatoes, yoghurt and dates. Visitors to the kingdom have great choices to savour ranging from traditional culinary experiences to a variety of international cuisines and fast food as well.

Harees – also known as ‘Jareesh’ is a dish of coarsely ground wheat mixed with meat and seasoned with spices.

Haneed – a slow roasted lamb dish which is cooked in ‘Tannour’ on a low temperature which ensures the meat is succulent and tender.

Kabsa – also known as ‘Machbus’ is prepared with rice, varieties of meat, vegetables and a mixture of spices.

Tharud – a traditional Arabian dish is a spicy lamb stew thickened over barley bread and there are variants where this dish is prepared with variety of meats which are stewed with vegetables and ladled over thin unleavened bread.

Saleeg – a traditional Saudi rice dish consisting of creamy, porridge like short grain rice and roasted meat mainly which is chicken. It is generally served with accompaniments like ‘Salata Hara - a spicy, salsa like condiment or ‘duggus – a chilli, tomato, parsley sauce or a tomato cucumber salad.

Martabak – is a stuffed and fried pancake with fillings like varieties of ground meat, eggs combined with spices and onions, peppers, garlic and clarified butter which is folded while being cooked and cut into squares when served.

Mandi – a traditional dish that originated from Yemen consisting mainly of meat and rice with a blend of spices called ‘Hawaij’ and the meat is cooked in a tandoor. The meat can be of sheep, chicken or camel.

Dajaj Mashwi – a Saudi barbecue speciality with boneless chicken breasts that are pounded thin marinated with spices and dried herbs and then grilled. This spicy and succulent dish is served with ‘Arabian Pilaf’ or a mixed salad with a garlic dipping sauce.

Gursan – is a Saudi traditional food dish made by placing dry, paper thin sheets of bread atop a meat and vegetable broth where the bread pieces soak up all the flavourful juices and the diner can enjoy a thick, nourishing and a hearty dish.

Tamees – is a flatbread baked in tandoor and served with popular stews like ‘Fuul – prepared with Fava beans or Adas is prepared with lentils’.

Importance of Dates in Islamic Culture
are a staple food in Saudi Arabia and the wider Middle East. From archaeological evidence cultivation and consumption of dates can be traced back to 6th millennium BCE in ancient Arabia. The date palm has long been a symbol of prosperity in the Arab world and is associated with fertility. The ‘Assyrian and Babylonian’ civilizations considered the date palm, the tree of life.

Dates are mentioned in the ‘sunnah’ of the Prophet and more than 20 times in Holy Quran and twice as many times in Holy Bible. Now the date palm and its traditions have been included on UNESCO’s list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The ‘FAO’ noted that the date palm provided high energy food that could easily be stored or carried. Dates are fat, cholesterol and sodium free and loaded with dietary fibre. They contain vitamins, 15 minerals essential for proper functioning of muscles and nervous system. The Arabs have been consuming fruits and nuts for thousands of years and over centuries and with influences from the region and innovations have evolved a variety of desserts, some simple and some rich and visitors can savour these delicacies that are full of flavour, tasty and a gastronomic experience.

Umali – is a traditional rich dessert prepared with puff pastry, mil and nuts. This dessert is a mixture of flaky breads baked with milk, sugar, raisins, cinnamon and pistachios or almonds.

Muhallebi – is a thickened milk pudding flavoured with Vanilla or rosewater topped with pomegranate syrup and and chopped nuts.

Jallab – is a popular and refreshing summer drink. It is a fruit syrup made from carob, dates, grape molasses and rose water and is then smoked with Arabic incense. It is served mixed with crushed ice and the cold drink is topped with floating pine nuts and raisins.

These buildings are in a former royal palace and offer a unique journey through Saudi Arabia’s history. This complex aims to promote historical awareness about the Arabian Peninsula while also illustrating its religious connection to Islam.

a) Murabba Palace: Also known as ‘Qasr al Murabba’ was built by King Abdulaziz and at the time of its construction was the first building erected outside the walls of the old city of Riyadh. The palace construction commenced in 1936 and was fully completed in 1945 with some novel features for the time – the palace had electricity by means of generators, had water closets with drainage systems, used automobiles as means of transportation and in order to connect the palace with the city centre a concrete road was constructed. Later in 1948 another novel feature in form of a lift was installed (the very first lift in Saudi Arabia). The palace has two storeys, 32 rooms and the palace architecture traditional ‘Najdi’. The palace witnessed many official visits from state dignitaries and signing of agreements while in use as a royal residence and royal court until the death of King Abdulaziz in 1953.In 1999 post a major renovation the palace was converted to a living museum and became part of ‘Murabba Development Project’ that houses the King Abdulaziz Historical Centre and the National Museum, the largest museum of Saudi Arabia.

b) King Abdulaziz Historical Centre: Is located in the former compound of the ‘Murabba Palace’. An urban integrated project providing cultural facilities and urban green spaces It focuses on national history and the history of the current Saudi state in general and its founder in particular. Its core is the museum designed to be interactive and informative using theatrical and multimedia techniques. A mosque, a library and a conference centre are also part of this centre.

c) The National Museum: Established 1999 to coincide with centennial celebrations of Saudi Arabia, this is a state-of-the-art museum and one of the finest in the Middle East. The museum has striking modernist architecture, its two floors contain eight well designed and informative galleries namely, Hall of Man and the Universe – depicts geological changes in earth’s surface, early human life, a meteorite from ‘Rub al Khali – the empty quarter’, interactive displays of the solar system, development of flora and fauna in the Arabian Peninsula. Hall of the Arab Kingdoms – showcases fourteen Arabian kingdoms of Arabian Peninsula from 5 B.C. to 700 A.D. Hall of Pre-Islamic Era – illustrates the lifestyle of Arabs before the advent of Islam. Hall of the Prophet’s Mission – imparts information about the Prophet Mohammed’s (P.B.U.H.) life, family, lineage and his migration from Makkah to Madinah. Hall of Islam and Arabian Peninsula – provides the timeline of Arabian Peninsula from the advent of Islam to 1st world war in which the Ottoman empire was dissolved. Hall of First and Second Saudi State, Unification of the Kingdom Hall – showcases the establishment of the modern kingdom of Saudi Arabia by King Abdulaziz Al-Saud from 1902 after he captured Riyadh. Hall of Hajj and Two Holy Mosques – has three models, one of Makkah province, the majestic Al Masjid al-Haram in Makkah and Al Masjid an-Nabawi in Madinah that welcome millions of Muslim pilgrims from all over the world every year. The museum has future expansion projects where notable additions will be a new exhibition hall, a theatre, three underground floors, a four-star hotel, training rooms and a restaurant.

Al-Masmak Fortress and Museum

Location: Deerah, Riyadh

Also known as ‘Qasr al-Masmak’, the fortress was built in 1865 under the reign of Mohammed Al Rasheed, is a clay and mudbrick fortress in the old city of Riyadh which witnessed the birth of a kingdom. In 1902 Ibn Saud captured the fort and took control of Riyadh. The fort can be divided into six distinct parts – the gate, the mosque, the majlis, the courtyard, the well and the towers. The fortress over time has served many purposes – it has housed garrisons that protected the city, it has been an ammunition warehouse and a prison as well.After renovation in 1995 the fortress was converted to a museum showcases maps and pictures of Saudi Arabia from 1912 to 1937 besides historical artifacts, works of art and a short documentary that re-enacts the capture of the fortress in battle of Riyadh whose spearhead can still be seen embedded in its wooden gate.

Antiquities Museum

Location: King Saud University, College of Tourism and Antiquities

Housed in sandstone building of King Saud University, the oldest university of Saudi Arabia has exhibits from the various archaeological excavations carried out by the institution. The relics on display bring to the fore an evocative picture of pre-Islamic and early Islamic civilizations in the kingdom showcasing Hellenic and Roman statues of Apollo and Hercules, horse and dolphin statues, wooden containers, door handles, door knockers, alabaster fragments, silver bowls, gold rings, shards of glazed pottery, storage jars and colourful frescoes. The museum also features a 873 coins collection of ‘Roman, Byzantine, Sassanian, Nabatean eras and Islamic coins from Umayyad, Abbasid and Ayyubid periods’. The exhibits on display here give evidence of the contributions of the developed societies of early Arabia tracing the evolution of country’s communities and people.

Saqr al-Jazeera Aviation Museum

Location: East Ring Road between exits 10 & 11

Is also known as the Royal Saudi Air Force Museum is also one of the biggest aero-space museums in the region. The museum presents the history of Royal Saudi Air Force from its establishment in 1920s to the present day.

The museum premises comprise of an outdoor static park and a modern indoor museum. Aircrafts in the static park include Cessna, Boeing, Douglas, Lockheed, BAC and Panavia Tornado. The indoor display halls contain exhibits of the history of ‘RSAF’, aircraft engines, weapons, uniform, insignias and decorations.

Museum of Currencies

Location: SAMA Headquarters, Al Ma’ther Street

Is also known as the money museum and is managed by ‘Saudi Arabia Monetary Agency – SAMA’. It is a specialized museum that showcases the different currencies used in the Arab world over the course of its history, a total collection of 30’000 currencies. The museum of currencies has five halls in total and contains currency that dates back to pre-Islamic civilizations as well as rare notes and coins from modern Arab countries. It also showcases raw materials used in banknote printing and coin minting with how currency is made and preserved. There are also audio-visual displays about making currency making, security marks used and appropriate methods to be adhered to when checking a bank note’s authenticity. Riyadh National Zoo

This zoological park is set in 55 acres of beautifully landscaped terrains and is a go to family attraction. Al Turaif – A UNESCO World Heritage Site
Location: Wadi Hanifah, Ad Diriyah

Is located on the north-western outskirts of Riyadh in the historical area of ‘Diriyah’. It was the original home of the Saudi Royal family and the capital of ‘Diriyah’ under the first Saudi state from 1744 – 1818. The ruins of the old city lie on either side of ‘Wadi Hanifah’ set on top of the hills overlooking the valley and are divided into three districts ‘Ghussaibah, Al Mulaybeed and Al Turaif’. The ruins of ‘Al Turaif’ were designated a UNESCO Heritage Site since 2010 and the area has undergone an elaborate, painstaking restoration plan aimed at bringing its historic legacy back to life. The district has been transformed into a vast open-air museum housing a series of themed collections alongside mosques, galleries and a traditional market selling authentic crafts and souvenirs. Visitors will be able to see where key moments in Saudi Arabia’s history occurred. The main sites are ‘Salwa Palace’ – a four storey royal residence and first home of the ‘Al Saud Emirs’ during the first Saudi state. Saud bin Saud Palace- one of the largest palaces built in ‘Najdi’ architectural style famous for its courtyard and ‘Burj Faysal Wall Tower’ are a snapshot of its storied past. ‘The Guest House and Al Turaif Bath House’ – is a traditional building famous for its architectural style. The building was waterproofed using different plasters. Both the guest house and bath were supplied with water from a well in the wadi. ‘Imam Mohammad bin Saud Mosque’ – this is where ‘Sheikh Mohammad bin Abdulwahab’ give lessons about Islam and was a centre of religious education which used to attract students from all over the Arabian Peninsula. ‘Al Bujairi’ – district was once home to religious scholar Sheikh Mohammad bin Abdulwahab has ‘Diriyah Museum’ which has exhibits of Saudi history, the restored ‘Al Zawiha Mosque’. Also interesting are the colourful geometric patterns that decorate the walls and heavy wooden doors of the district buildings. The on-site restaurants serve authentic local food and it is a place for culture and history buffs and a good place for a family day out to learn and enjoy.

The Edge of The World

Location: Makkah Al Mukarramah Road

Also known as ‘Jabal Fihrayn’ is a geological wonder in the rocky desert north-west 90 kilometres away from Riyadh. The site earned its name ‘edge of the world’ because from atop the escarpment the visitor can have panoramic views of the horizon.

Reached through winding desert trails that run alongside a ridge of ‘Tuwaiq’ escarpment. The towering cliffs jut dramatically from the middle of a barren desert and when visitors stand atop the cliff and look at the horizon are rewarded with magnificent views of the sky which seems to melt into the barren earth. Visitors on the cliff will also spot dried riverbed and might spot camels and their herders moving far below following a well-trodden path of an ancient caravan route that once passed within its shadow. To walk its narrow lanes is to enter a living museum encased in thick walls, labyrinth of winding alleyways, shaded pathways with hundreds of mud houses which are stunning examples of ‘Najdi’ architecture and have been there for centuries with distinct triangular windows and roofs and ornately carved wooden doors and some houses still have the names of families who lived here. Khubayb Al-Reem Nature Reserve

Location: Hejaz Road, 80 kilometres west of Riyadh

Is a beautiful nature reserve surrounded by red sand dunes also is a natural habitat for a rare type of deer called ‘Al Reem’ from which the place got its name. Al Kharrarah National Park

Located 63 kilometres southwest, away from the hustle and bustle of Riyadh ‘Al Kharrarah National Park’ is a blend of craggy rock formations and sweeping sand dunes. It is also home to one of Saudi Arabia’s most spectacular natural gems, the beautiful seasonal ‘Lake Kharrarah – also known as lake of liquid light’ which lies amidst an ocean of sand dunes. After heavy rainfall the massive surge of water rushes down the steep dunes into the valley below forming a temporary lake which becomes deep enough for a swim. When the weather heats up the water evaporates and the valley lake-bed becomes a striking green in contrast to the surrounding red sand dunes where in early spring migratory birds can be spotted. The lakeside is a good spot to picnic, to barbecue or to watch the sunset under the shade of acacia trees.

For the best views of the valley’s breath-taking scenery visitors should climb to the top of a sand dune and on a clear day one can spot the region’s best known landmark the ‘Tuwaiq escarpment’ where lies the ‘edge of the world’. ‘Kharrarah National Park’ is situated next to the famous red sand dunes – a popular hotspot for desert adventure activities like dune bashing, quad biking, sand boarding and kite flying. Qaryat Al-Asba – Ancient Rock Art

Location: Near highway exit for Musayqirah

The study of ancient rock art in Saudi Arabia is quite recent and the period which they belong to is still being studied. An interesting site to go to Is located 140 kilometres west of Riyadh and geologically this is an isolated outcrop of a hill that rises abruptly from a plain. ‘Qayrat Al-Asba consists of multiple petroglyphs depicted on the outcrop including camels, ostriches, ibexes, horse riders, battle scenes with clear petroglyphs of cavalry and infantry, human skeletons, wild cattle and date palms. In ancient times the entire area was grassland and the rock art site depicts the animals people were exposed to and gives a general idea of their life from that period which is estimated to be Neolithic period.

Gold Souq:
Location: Al Deerah
Saudi Arabia is the largest manufacturer of the gold in the region and the gold souq is part of ‘Souq al-Thumairi’. Visitors will delight in exploring the jewellery shops laden with necklaces, bangles, bracelets, chains and in picking a golden bargain.

Souq Taibah:
Location: King Fahd Road
Is one of the oldest and largest souqs in the city. This mega bazaar is often referred to as the Ladies mall by the locals due to the fact that most of the items sold in its maze-like corridors cater to women. Souq Taibah is categorized into sections selling woven carpets, fashionable yet affordable abayas, men’s thobs, spices, fragrances, silver and gold goods, home décor items, variety of clothing, children’s toys and the list goes on.

Bisht Souq:
Location: Al Deerah
Is an interesting souq to shop at and wander around. As the name of this souq goes ‘Bisht’ is a traditional Saudi cloak worn over ‘thob’ on important occasions and celebrations. ‘Bishts’ worn in summer are made of thin fabric while ‘Bishts’ worn in winters are made of thicker fabric. Besides ‘Bishts’ this souq also sells ‘Farwa – thicker winter coat’ ideal for wearing in desert camping in winters. They are sold for both males and females and make for a good souvenir to gift or for personal use as well.
